Cebu Named One of Best Islands in the World

READERS of an international travel and lifestyle magazine have named three Philippine islands, including Metro Cebu , as among the 20 best islands in the world. Conde Nast Traveler’s 28th Reader’s Choice Awards ranked Cebu 19th among the best islands in the world, with a score of 80.404. Palawan ranked first with a score of 85.937, the second time it was named the best island, while Boracay ranked 15th with a score of 80.856. The results were announced Tuesday. Cebu was described as the most densely populated island in the Philippines and famous for its beaches “on the mainland, as well as around many surrounding islands.” “Not as wild as Phuket in Thailand, Cebu City is more personal, with plenty of up and coming restaurants and shopping,” the magazine said. Philippines Ranks 14th in Best Places to Raise Family for Expats

THE Philippines ranked 14 th among 41 countries in a listing of best places to raise a family for expatriates, an international survey showed. In InterNation’s 2015 Family Life Index, the Philippines trailed countries like Mexico, Canada, United Kingdom, China, Thailand, South Korea, Italy, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the United States, among others. The Family Life Index ranked countries according to expatriate parents’ response to subcategories, namely availability of child care and education, cost of child care and education, quality of education and family well-being. The Philippines ranked seventh in availability of child care and education, fifth in cost of childcare and education, and 26 th in family well-being. Having grown up in Chicago, I never thought it would be possible to live in a big, First World city for $1,000 a month. That much wouldn’t even cover my mortgage for a month back home… But when I arrived in Cebu City , which is on the eastern shore of the island of Cebu in the Philippines, I was immediately surprised by what I saw. High rises, malls, fancy cars—a major First World city. Yet, it really is possible to live there for $1,000 a month. Rent can be expensive in the city center, but just outside the city in Banilad you can find a two-bedroom, two-bathroom townhouse for $200—or venture a few miles farther and there are homes listed at just $115. And for just $5 or $6 a day you can hire a cleaner to clean your new home. A major benefit of living in Cebu is the amazing public transport.
